I am looking for a good TV Tuner Card. I find a page at SnapStream
Media that lists a lot of different TV Tuner Card manufactures
<http://www.snapstream.com/Products/Products_PVS3_SysReq.asp>:

Adaptec VideOh! Media Center (USB 2.0)
ASUS TV880
ATi All-In-Wonder Radeon family
ATi TV Wonder family
ATi Rage 128 PRO family
ATi Rage 128 family
Avermedia AverTV Stereo (PCI)
Hauppauge WinTV-PVR250
Hauppauge WinTV-PVR350
Hauppauge Win-TV GO FM
Hauppauge Win-TV Go (PCI)
Hauppauge Win-TV Go Stereo (PCI)
Hauppauge Win-TV Radio
Hauppauge Win-TV USB
Hauppauge Win-TV USB Pro
IO/Magic PC PVR - Personal Video Recorder
LifeView FlyVideo 98 (PCI)
Nvidia Personal Cinema New (AGP)
Nvidia Personal Cinema Original (AGP)
Osprey - 100 PCI (using Conexant BT8xx chipset drivers)
Pinnacle PCTV (PCI)
Pinnacle PCTV (USB)
PixelView Xcapture (PCI / using new Conexant 2338x chipset)
STB Systems (PCI / using Conexant BT8xx chipset drivers)
TerraTec Cinergy 400 TV

Does anyone know which ones are good and which are crummy cards?
My objective is to make the highest quality possible DVD's of my
favor TV programs.

I have an All in Wonder 8500 which works OK--does not tune channels that are
"digital"--i.e. Channel 100 and higher--you need a regular Cable box for
those. I would recommend a separate ATI tuner card for normal TV or a look
at the Hauppage for high-def if you want to use/upgrade your regular video
card separate from the TV card--used to be that the AIW cards were not the
fastest ones, but I think the 9800 AIW is the same as non-AIW now, is that
right? Me personally, I'd probably go the AIW route again.

PS - avoid "mono sound" TV cards, and I would avoid the USB ones as well.

Uh, check the revision date on the latest drivers for the Hauppauge HD
boards. They haven't been updated in a year and a half. If you want HD
the "MyHD" board is currently considered to be the "hot setup". The Dvico
Fusion, which is simply an HD tuner on a board with a BT8X8 chip and does
the decoding in software, is cheap and works if you have a good
signal--it's also starting to develop some third-party support.

But none of the HD boards are on the supported hardware list for
snapstream--if you want that kind of application that supports HD then
"MyHDTV" for Windows or "MythTV" for Linux would be better bets--note that
for Linux you need an HD board with Linux drivers and there is only one on
the market, fortunately the price is reasonable for an HD board.

The 9600 AIW is faster than the 9600 Pro I understand but not as fast as the
XT, the 9800 AIW is the same speed as the Pro but again doesn't match the
XT.

Then don't bother with an internal TV tuner.

Get a Canopus ADVC-100 (requires a firewire port in your computer) and use
an external tuner (like a good VCR would have). If you are capturing from
satelite or digital-tv, you can use them. Just plug the S-Video-Out
directly into the ADVC-100 and fire up your favorite capture software.

Consider your needs for capture/edit software. It can all be done with
freeware. Virtual Dub and TmpGnc are handy tools. I use other software
(Uleed Media Studio and Adobe Premeir) because I happen to have it (due to a
video "hobby") but you don't need to spend any money on software to
accomplish your goal.

I have the ATI TV Wonder, quality is about as good as might be expected on
standard cable and I am happy with it. It captures home video quite well
too. There's a new one out (TV Wonder Pro or similar) which uses a newer
chipset, I imagine that would be an improvement of sorts. However much
depends on the quality of the incoming signal too.

ATI TV Wonder is quite good stand-alone TV tuner. Tunes up to 125 channels,
iirc. Uses a Phillips tuner and BT878 chip. Accepts Coaxial, Component and
S-Video connections; Component and S-Video ports being on a tethered
break-out box on some newer versions. Beware the card comes in a mono-only
version (TV Wonder LE, I think). This cards works well with third party
software, such as Cyberlink PowerVCR II and InterVideo WinDVR.

NVidia based TV-tuner cards - opinions wanted - I'm currently using an ATI AIW VE (PCI) that works fairly well, but the problem I have with it is I simply can't use any newer drivers aside from the ones on the install CD, nor can I seem to use any newer version of ATI's MMC software without problem...
